This is an actual fragment of a large iron / nickel asteroid that impacted earth about 5000 years ago in what is now Argentina, South America. Most "Shooting Stars" or "Falling Stars" that are seen streaking across the night sky are usually about this size. The majority of them never reach the ground as they are completely burned up and disintegrate high in the atmosphere.
